Traffic contaminants

Why it matters: It has been identified as highly toxic to aquatic life, especially to certain fish species like cohosalmon. Research shows that even very small concentrations can be lethal to fish, making it a serious concern for water quality and ecosystems.

Where it’s found: In stormwater runoff and road dust, particularly in areas with heavy traffic.

Origin: It is formed when 6PPD, a chemical widely used in vehicle tire rubber as an anti-oxidant and anti-ozonant (to make tires more durable), reacts with ozone in the environment.

6PDD-Quinone

6PPD-Quinone is a toxic chemical compound that has gained attention in recent years, especially in environmental science. It was placed on the EU surface water Watch List in March 2025.

6PPD-quinone has been detected in human blood and urine sampes, and studies are ongoing to assess its possible health impacts.
