Where it’s found: Caffeine is ubiquitous in the environment. It is mainly associated with household wastewater, but is alsofound in otherwater samples, including runoff and groundwater.
Origin: Caffeine occurs naturally in many plants, such as coffee and cacao. It is alsoproduced synthetically and added to sports drinks and otherprocessed foods.

Caffeine is well-known for most people. It is a naturally occuring compound found in foods and drinks, such as chocolate, coffee, and tea.
In D4RUNOFF, caffeine has been found in several surface runoff samples, possibly from public urination.
